One last plea for Hudson/Jenkins vote

January 26th, 2011

As Andrew posted, the vote for Jenkins is open now. You need to be a member of the users or the dev list to be eligible, and the detailed instruction can be found here. I thought I’d take the opportunity to make one last plea to the community.

When the representative of Oracle says it to my face that I should just go find something else to work on, or that I need to immediately stop making [infrastructure] changes or the next email I will receive will be from their lawyers, or when you hear him describe me as a hurdle to the community, I think writing on the wall is pretty clear to me.

As such, regardless of the outcome of the vote, I find it very unlikely that I can continue to contribute to the Hudson project, and thus I will move on on Jenkins. I can’t control what others do, but I can at least decide what I personally do. While days leading up has been rather hard on me emotionally, now that I made up my mind, I actually feel good (besides, it’s such a nice day in San Jose today.) I’m confident that many key core and plugin contributors (who has made Hudson what it is today) will join me, and I hope users will follow us too (which is the other part of what made Hudson what it is today.)

What I’d like to ask the broader Hudson community is to have your voice heard and give us your support by voting. That you want to be with us. It lets us maintain the continuity of the project, it gives us legitimacy, and it sends a singal to the unaware silent majority which way they should follow. It’s the best way to maintain our community.

So please let your voice heard, and help us spread the word. For one last time.

    Kohsuke forever!!! Muchos ánimos!

  2. January 27th, 2011 at 12:48 | #2

I’m not a member of the mailing list. I use Hudson 4 years ago.

Hudson is Kohsuke and the community.

If Kohsuke and the community move to Jenkins, I’ll definitely be moving on to Jenkins.

Lost my membership of hudson-users somewhere over the years or at least the move to google groups and so couldn’t vote myself. But just wanted to add my voice to those supporting your position. Have been using Hudson CI on every project I could for several years now. More then long enough to understand KK’s massive contribution and commitment to the project. Looking forward to replacing all my installations with Jenkins at some point. It’s going to be hard for Oracle to still claim they’re speaking for the community now, seems to me they’ve very much spoken their own mind.

  23. January 27th, 2011 at 16:38 | #23

    Keep you excelent work Kohsuke.
Hudson community is by your side.

  24. January 27th, 2011 at 17:57 | #24

I’m not in the mailing list either but Hudson is a great product because of the great foundation you’ve built, but also because of the community which surrounds it. This community supports you and will follow you with Jenkins too.

You’ve probably had to manage a lot of stress these days, but we encourage you to keep going ahead.

    Best wishes!

I had heard very good comments about Hudson and actually I’m using it and I think that it’s greate so, if the core members and the creator are moving to Jenkins, I’m moving on too.

Go Kohsuke!! Long live to Jenkins!

I wish you all the best.

I have no Hudson mail so I won’t be voting, but we are setting up Hudson at the office and also know some people who uses it. If you just branch Hudson, we will switch to Jenkins and forget about Oracle’s ill-brained stuff.

Bad times for Java with Oracle. If you believe in Karma, sooner or later Oracle will get a “big reward”.

Hudson is a name, a cover. You all, Kohsuke and the thriving communitity, are the soul of this and I only have my most sincere thanks for such a great work.

Come on Kohsuke! You are not running alone!

  40. January 28th, 2011 at 01:34 | #40

Good luck with Jenkins! We are all looking forward to it.

  41. January 28th, 2011 at 01:38 | #41

Sad that it had to come to this but I will definitely move to Jenkins. Very dissappointed in Oracle after seeing them clearly bullying open source projects and communities. Not a fitting way to continue the work of Sun, but then I guess that was never their plan, which is a great shame.

Hudson is dead. Long live Jenkins!

  42. January 28th, 2011 at 02:30 | #42

Thank you for your effort. hudson-jenkins rules! Long live Jenkins!

Go for Jenkins man. Your ideas and your great work is not restricted to a name. Hudson, Jenkins, etc… just keep moving, keep working and show again your qualities.
So, thanks for all the work you have done for the open-source community.
