One last plea for Hudson/Jenkins vote

January 26th, 2011

As Andrew posted, the vote for Jenkins is open now. You need to be a member of the users or the dev list to be eligible, and the detailed instruction can be found here. I thought I’d take the opportunity to make one last plea to the community.

When the representative of Oracle says it to my face that I should just go find something else to work on, or that I need to immediately stop making [infrastructure] changes or the next email I will receive will be from their lawyers, or when you hear him describe me as a hurdle to the community, I think writing on the wall is pretty clear to me.

As such, regardless of the outcome of the vote, I find it very unlikely that I can continue to contribute to the Hudson project, and thus I will move on on Jenkins. I can’t control what others do, but I can at least decide what I personally do. While days leading up has been rather hard on me emotionally, now that I made up my mind, I actually feel good (besides, it’s such a nice day in San Jose today.) I’m confident that many key core and plugin contributors (who has made Hudson what it is today) will join me, and I hope users will follow us too (which is the other part of what made Hudson what it is today.)

What I’d like to ask the broader Hudson community is to have your voice heard and give us your support by voting. That you want to be with us. It lets us maintain the continuity of the project, it gives us legitimacy, and it sends a singal to the unaware silent majority which way they should follow. It’s the best way to maintain our community.

So please let your voice heard, and help us spread the word. For one last time.

hudson ,

If I become an member now, would my vote be valid?

Besides I’m not joining for the sake of it, I’m very interested in how Hudson could contribute to some fast moving heterogeneous(Language and build chain-wise) projects that could benefit from the CI infrastructure Jenkins would provide

You have my support. Go Jenkins Go!

  10. January 27th, 2011 at 00:23 | #10

I definitly support this decision, leading technologies like Hudson/Jenkins should not be managed by people with commercial goals but by people who only want the best.

This weekend I’m doing a talk at the PHPBenelux Conference about CI and most of it is about Hudson/Jenkins. I will deliver the message that Jenkins is going to be a fact. Since CI is definitly gaining popularity in the PHP community I bet you can count on a lot of Jenkins users who don’t even know who (or in this case what) Hudson is :)

It’s not about Hudson vs for me, it’s all about “What’s got the largest community base and support”. KK – I’m sure when ever that new Jenkins branch shows up, that’ll become the new CI server to use.

I know I’m waiting for it!

to be honest I’m not a contributor but I will stand up for all the amazing work you did all the time.
I’m sure you will do the best you can for Jenkins and it is best for all of us to let Hudson go.

I’m not a Oracle hater but this whole f*ck-you attitude SHOULD not go anywhere.
You got my vote and I hope all of the followers do it too.

Hudson is dead, long live Jenkins!

I hope you, KK, and not your company trademarked Jenkins? Oracle can take your company again.

  19. January 27th, 2011 at 07:00 | #19

I can’t vote, but please do whatever seems most appropriate to you; you get my support anyway. As soon as Jenkins is out, I will replace every Hudson installation I did in the past with a Jenkins installation.

    I’m definitely with you!!

  29. January 27th, 2011 at 10:09 | #29

We are definitely on your side Kohsuke.
Whatever Oracle tries to say, Hudson would be nothing approaching what it’s become today without you and your work. But tomorrow Hudson features will quickly become lame compared to Jenkins richness and speed of evolution.

Hudson is dead. Long live Jenkins!

  34. January 27th, 2011 at 11:00 | #34

Don’t let it get you down. Hudson has been a big help to me at work and I just wanted to let you know people appreciate all the hard work that has been put into the project. Plus, there will be limitless Leroy Jenkins references now.

As Hudson users since 2007 (switched from TeamCity), we (the Nuxeo team) are certain that the only way to move Hudson forward is out of reach of Oracle bullying.
